Hi, everyone. My name is Lida and I have been an online English tutor since 2014.
Tailor-made lessons are a recipe I never fail to follow -unless there is a certain syllabus I will be asked to use by a student or a company that will hire me. However, I prefer materials of my own choosing.
The first tutorial is one I see only as an introductory meeting, where we discuss who is who with my student/students, their needs, aspirations, the actual free time they have to devote to language learning and their goals.
If the main aim is to learn at a fast pace and the goal to get a certificate, to pass specific exams or receive a degree and time is money, then, definitely the suggested teaching scheme from my side could be overwhelming. This means that the set goals by a student will have to be realistic having considered the hours he/she/they can spend studying.
Regarding the materials I use when I teach, they vary from lyrics, TV show clips, newspaper/magazine/online articles, book excerpts from different genres, standard grammar exercises, advertisements, and radio/podcast shows to anything that could assist them in the learning process. Furthermore, one could not say no to specialized grammar and student course books especially written to help people learn and better understand a language.
I consider the teaching process one that I must follow together with my students; thus, the final product is a decision that we will make together.
First and foremost, however, I always ask my prospective students if they are truly committed to the cause. If not, spending their money unsure of their ability to commit to learning English would be a shame.
