One experience that has greatly influenced my perspective on tutoring is learning that students do not all understand or learn in the same way. I have come to realise that when a student struggles with a subject, it does not necessarily mean the student is not intelligent. Sometimes, the teaching method simply does not connect with the student's learning style, interests, or level of understanding.
This has taught me to be patient, observant, and flexible as a tutor. Instead of simply giving a student more work when they are struggling, I first try to understand what is causing the difficulty. I break complex concepts into smaller, simpler steps, use practical examples from everyday life, ask questions, and encourage the student to participate actively in the lesson.
For example, if a student finds English or another subject boring, I would connect the lesson to things that interest the student—such as conversations, stories, social media, sports, or real-life situations. This makes the subject feel relevant rather than like something they are forced to learn.
Most importantly, I would encourage the student and celebrate small improvements. I want my students to understand that making mistakes is part of learning and that difficulty with a subject today does not mean they cannot become good at it tomorrow.
My goal as a tutor is therefore not just to help students get good grades, but to build their confidence, curiosity, and genuine interest in learning. I believe that when a student feels understood, supported, and encouraged, they are much more likely to succeed.
