I work one on one with my students to gain a sense of what they are looking for.
For example, I suggest reading together -- an article, book, comic -- then discuss what the student read. In this way, together we understand what was difficult, what they excel in, and how best to move forward. My lessons are casual but structured; it is important to celebrate wins but also tailor our time together to what is most necessary for each student.
I also offer basic conversation to help learners practice pronunciation, conversation flow, and help boost confidence for speaking English in a casual setting. Conversation and understanding is the backbone to confidence and everyday usage of the English language. I want students to connect what they read into how they speak, how they form sentences, and how they process conversations. Since there is an abundance of English media, I try to bring outside sources of interest into the tutoring session so learning can extend beyond our time together, and that learning because an daily ritual rather than one hour a week chore.
While my teaching experience has been casual in the past, I value interpersonal relationships. I want to bring that comfort into my tutoring sessions so students and learners feel comfortable and ready to learn, instead of feeling stressed. Tutoring sessions can focus on a range of topics, but I want to encourage learners to explore all four areas of language learning: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. My sessions will help learners find a plan to work on each area and identify areas that need more practice, so our sessions become one part of a whole.
