Among the sessions I have had as a tutor , the most meaningful experiences I had came through sessions with adult student who initially struggled with confidence more than ability. At the beginning of our sessions, students tend to be hesitant to speak, often apologizing for mistakes or pausing for long periods before answering simple questions. Some are nonchalant or aggressive but just are more frustrated with themselves with trying to rush to understand a language faster than anything. That experience reminded me that teaching in general is not only about grammar and vocabulary, but also about creating safer spaces and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves with little to no prejudice.

Within every session, I have personally come to learn that every student brings a unique personality, learning pace, and motivation. Because of this, I readily adapt my teaching methods to suit the individual rather than following a rigid structure,going 'with the flow' as some would say , but having a dynamic where the student feels they are appreciated for every milestone achieved. During our sessions, I combined conversational practice with practical grammar exercises and real-life situations. For example, we practiced English through role-plays related to travel, job interviews, and everyday conversations. I noticed that the more natural and personal the topics became, the more relaxed and engaged the student felt.

My natural ability to speak English and empathetic approach to teaching allowed me to explain complex grammar points in simple ways, using examples connected to the student’s interests and daily experiences. Instead of overwhelming the learner with long explanations, I focused on clarity, patience, and repetition when necessary. I also used short reading passages, listening exercises, and spontaneous conversations to strengthen all language skills gradually.

What made the lessons especially effective was the dynamic between teacher and student. Since the sessions were one-on-one, I could immediately recognize weaknesses, adjust the lesson pace, and provide direct feedback in real time. Some days, the student needed more speaking practice; other days, we focused on pronunciation or writing corrections. This flexibility made the lessons feel natural rather than mechanical.

Over time, I watched the student become more fluent and self-assured. Small victories, such as speaking without translating mentally or expressing opinions confidently in English, became moments of genuine progress. Experiences like this have shown me that successful language teaching is built on expertise, empathy, adaptability, and meaningful communication. In private lessons especially, the connection between teacher and learner plays a crucial role in transforming language learning into a motivating and rewarding journey,as the teacher gains a better understanding of the student in question and the free expressive student doesn't get humiliated and/or judged by others. This gives them a better platform to thrive without shame and can achieve even greater understanding.
