Teaching Methods

I believe no student is "bad at math"—they just haven't been taught in a way that makes sense to them yet. My core method is Concept-First, Memorization-Second. Instead of drilling formulas, I use the "Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract" approach: we start with real-world examples, move to visual models, and only then lock in the abstract notation. I also use Socratic questioning—guiding students to discover answers themselves rather than just telling them. When a student gets stuck, I don't jump in. I ask: "What do you notice? What have you tried? What if we test a smaller number first?" This builds true problem-solving muscle.

I'm trained in multiple modalities—I adapt in real time. If you're a visual learner, we'll sketch it. If you're verbal, we'll talk it through. If you're kinesthetic, we'll use manipulatives and interactive whiteboard tools. One size never fits all.

Lesson Dynamics
A typical session has a steady rhythm: Connect, Warm Up, Dive In, Wrap.

Connect (2 mins): A quick human moment. How was your week? What felt hard? This builds trust and lowers the affective filter—you can't learn well if you're anxious or shut down.

Warm-Up (5 mins): A retrieval practice problem from last session. This isn't a pop quiz; it's science-backed spacing to cement long-term memory.

Dive In (40 mins): The heart of the lesson. I introduce the new concept, model two or three examples with think-aloud narration, then shift to joint problem-solving. The student shares their screen or whiteboard, and I coach in real time. I celebrate good thinking, not just right answers. Mistakes are treated as information, not failure—we pause, trace the error backward, and refine the approach.

Wrap & Plan (8 mins): We solve one "exit ticket" problem independently to prove mastery, then I summarize the key takeaway and assign 15-20 minutes of focused optional practice. Students leave with a clear win and a roadmap for the week.

Energy is calm, encouraging, and focused. I keep the pace brisk but never rushed. Parents receive a brief session note afterward so you're never in the dark about progress.
