My preferred method for teaching is focusing on the student's specific requirements. Once they provide me with particular topics or exercises they struggle with, I can carefully come up with concise, logical explanations to give in class, as well as several exercises we can do together or which I can supervise, to allow the student to compare their theoretical knowledge with their skills. It is important to me that the student understands what they are doing, and why what they are doing works, so that they may later replicate the same success on their own. To me, mathematics must be logical for the student: that is to say, even when faced with a daunting task, they should be able to visualize and conceptualize how the methodology they're using logically leads to the correct answer. Once this particular level of understanding is reached, accurate problem solving and future concepts and topics become that much easier to approach. I believe in dividing my lessons into an introduction of the topic at hand, a theoretical explanation of what is being done, one or two examples provided by me of how to use the concept correctly, and finally, a round of problems for the student to solve; this can be further extended into a round of review or questions, should the student have remaining doubts. We can then schedule additional sessions to further reinforce the subject, should it prove too long to adequately cover in a single class, or should the student desire additional supervised practice.
