Hello! My name is Harold Asou-Dodji and I have an academic background in Psychology, Human Rights and Cultural Diplomacy but have practiced as language and communication tutor (English and French) fore more than 15 years. I teach young and adult learners. My lessons are structured around the Andragogical Approach, which is the leading theory in adult education. This learner-centred model recognizes that adult learners bring a wealth of experiences to the classroom and learn best when content is practical, relevant, and immediately applicable to their personal or professional lives.
I usually start my lessons with a clear objective and real-life context. For instance, if the goal is to improve spoken English for workplace communication, I will start the session with a focus on vocabulary and sentence structures for customer interactions, phone conversations, or writing emails. I first engage you in a brief discussion to activate prior knowledge, followed by a short, targeted input (e.g., vocabulary, grammar point, or functional phrases). I then help you reinforce it through practice or pair work, role-playing, or problem-solving tasks that simulate real-life scenarios. To help you best, I adopt a facilitative rather than directive teaching style. I create a safe, respectful learning environment where you will feel encouraged to express yourself without fear of making mistakes. I acknowledge and integrate your experiences into lesson content, personalise examples to your life, and frequently ask for your feedback on what you find useful.
The aspect of English I am best equipped to teach is grammar and spoken communication, particularly functional and situational language. Many adults need English for everyday interactions, job interviews, workplace discussions, or travel. I focus on pronunciation, fluency, and confidence-building through structured dialogues, listening comprehension, and real-time feedback.
Above all, I believe in empowering learners by fostering autonomy and self-reflection. I guide them to set learning goals, identify their strengths, and use available resources (like mobile apps, language partners, or journaling) outside the classroom. This integrative, respectful, and purpose-driven approach makes the lesson meaningful and ensures that learners not only acquire language skills but also the confidence to use them in the real world.
