For me teaching a language has a lot to do with communication and the mastery of every-day life and daily-used vocabulary, up to more complex semantic areas such as philosophy, science etc. Moreover, I tend to have a close-up on grammar only after one gets to practice their speaking skills. This is one of the reasons why my students don't get shy before or while speaking. As a matter of facts, making mistakes is the key: in language acquisition, you definitely learn from them, but in order to make mistakes and eventually correct yourself, one needs to speak.
