I structure my systems physiology lessons in three connected phases: I open with a brief real-world or clinical scenario that prompts students to reason through the problem using their existing knowledge, which surfaces misconceptions early and gives the session a clear anchor point; I then build the physiology up systematically from mechanism to system-level regulation in short 10–15 minute conceptual blocks, using diagrams, animations and data visualisations to make dynamic processes intuitive, with a quick formative check after each block rather than saving assessment to the end; and I close by returning to the opening scenario so students apply what they've learned to explain or predict the physiological response, often extending it to a related clinical example, which reinforces the integrative, systems-level thinking that this subject demands.
