Over a typical remote 40minute tutorial from Grade 1, I would be guided by the needs of the individual. I would look to begin with:
- A warm welcome. Typically, "Hello and how are you? Perhaps a Hello song (which i know kindergartens use. Quick questions regarding their school day?
- Review and Routine. Typically revisiting words, phrasing from the English lesson taught at school. Perhaps a game of 'show and tell'. Using repetition for confidence building. Give lots of praise! "You are doing so well! Keep going!"
- New Vocabulary. Typically by choosing 1 theme only (e.g. colours/ animals/ family and numbers). Introduce 3-5 new words with pictures or objects in line with school lesson. Use short sentences e.g. "It is a cat" and have the child repeat. Mini game of What's missing using flashcards.
- Mini Reading. Typically, by introducing one letter sound. Show simple 3-letter words e.g. cat dog sun. Keep light and encouraging, focus on sound recognition
- Practice through play: Typically, sing a relatable song e.g. Old MacDonal
- Review and Goodbye. Goodbye song. Celebrate a successful class. introducer next class as per school activities. Ending each session on a positive note!
Overall, I would look to keep the language simple and clear, to build confidence, and have fun! Children respond well, when they are happy, excited and engaged in the moment. They can return to their English class at school with something they have learned and remembered, to impress the teacher!
